Eating Your Oats

I love oatmeal. I especially love it steaming hot on winter mornings when I’m all tucked in with my feet up on the hearth in front of my wood stove and the sun is just peaking up over the horizon. I cooked up oatmeal for Duncan from the time he was a wee boy, through high school years, and beyond and the memories of all of those times bring a smile to my face. But what about eating your oats during the seasons when it is hot and sunny?  I don’t want to relegate my breakfast oats to the shelf until the fall.

Well, I eat them raw. Now hold on for a minute before you think me a little odd. I have lived most all of my life living “outside the box.” Why should the way I eat oats be any different! I can promise you that this is one of the easiest and fastest breakfasts around. Here’s what I do.

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • A pretty bowl and a spoon, one for each person.
  • A few spoonfuls of yogurt. I like plain so I can flavor it anyway I want.
  • A handful of raw oats. My favs are Bob’s Red Mill GF Oats
  • Some walnuts or pecans.
  • A handful of frozen or fresh fruit. Currently I’m enjoying frozen organic blueberries.
  • A little drizzle of pure Grade B maple syrup.
  • An optional sprinkling of Hulled Hemp Seed Hearts also by Bob’s.

Procedure:

  • Put the yogurt in the bowl.
  • Add the oats, nuts, fruit, and finish off with a drizzle of maple syrup.
  • Add an optional sprinkling of hemp hearts.
  • Enjoy!

I had some on this fine sunny almost summer morning at Pie Cottage.

P.S. If you aren’t fond of raw oats, then just cook them up and add all the other ingredients. Either way you’ll have a bowlful of yumminess.

Shall we eat outside today?
