History of the Original Morning Glory Muffin
Yesterday I posted my adaption of a recipe for Easy Gluten Free Morning Glory Muffins. I was curious to find some history about the original Morning Glory Muffin—who created it, when and where. So here’s the brief rundown of what I learned.
Morning Glory Muffins are attributed to Chef Pam McKinstry of the Morning Glory Cafe which was open from 1978 to 1994 on Nantucket’s Old South Wharf in New England. Numerous websites say that Gourmet Magazine published the recipe in 1981, and that in 1991 the recipe was chosen as one of Gourmet’s 25 favorite recipes from the past 50 years. I could not find that either on the Gourmet.com or Epicurious.com websites.
One Nantucket source mentions a little 22-page recipe booklet written and published by the Cafe in 1981 called Morning Glory Cafe Recipes which includes the recipe.
When I looked through books on my own shelf I found the original recipe included in The Apple Lover’s Cookbook by Amy Traverso with her recommendations for using firm-sweet apples. A few you might see in grocery stores that will fit the bill are Braeburn, Cameo, Honeycrisp or Jazz.
I think this muffin has become a classic of American home cooking. Here’s a link to another source with the original recipe.
